This analytical method is based on the so-called slender ship or slender body method. It computes the energy in the free surface wave pattern generated by the vessel and hence the wave resistance of the vessel. To calculate the total resistance, Hullspeed calculates and adds the viscous resistance component using the ITTC’57 friction coefficient calculation method and the specified form factor.
The following section explains how to use the slender body method provided in Hullspeed to compute the resistance of both mono- and multihull vessels. The information given here also applies to the calculation of the free surface wave patterns described later in this manual since they use the same theoretical basis.
